Let's Dive In!

LinkedIn Connection Pro Tip

LinkedIn doesn't allow us to send connection requests to so many people at once, so we won't be able to connect with all of you directly. If we're not already connected, send me a connection invite—but here's a useful networking tip: when sending a connection request, always include a note. This adds a personal touch and makes your networking more meaningful.

If you're on a computer, it's simple – click "Connect" and then "Add a Note." If you're on mobile, navigate to the person's profile, tap the three dots menu, and choose "Personalize Invite." It's a small gesture but goes a long way.

Now, let's address some pre-submitted questions:

Q1. How often should you update your LinkedIn profile description and summary?

Simple answer: Update your profile whenever you have meaningful changes or achievements to share. Keep it current and informative.

Q2. Is there a correct order for your resume sections?

The key here is relevance. Place the more important sections at the top, such as your work experience. If you attend a prestigious school, it can go to the top. Use common sense and tailor your resume to your unique situation.

If you want more specific guidance on what to do for your specific situation, check out the Ultimate Resume Handbook.

Q3. How do you tackle interviews when you have zero professional experience?

Volunteering is a valuable path. It's like real-life training, and you can include this experience on your resume under "professional work experience." Show you can handle real-world challenges and gain valuable skills.

Q4. Why do some companies have technical interviews for entry-level positions while others don't?

Startups often don't conduct technical interviews due to resource constraints or a lack of technical interview expertise to be able to conduct the interviews. Larger companies can more easily rely on these interviews to assess your skills.

Some companies believe leet code interviews are not the best way to screen candidates, even though it is a more widely accepted method of interviewing. It varies from one company to another.

Q5. How do you excel in personality round interviews?

These interviews aim to assess how you'd fit into the company culture. Emphasize your impact on previous projects, showing you can add value and work effectively in a team.

We cover the 10 ways to show the impact of your work in the Ultimate Resume Handbook.

Q6. How to explain resume gaps?

Gaps in your resume are common, especially considering the challenges of the job market recently. Taking courses, attending training, pursuing personal projects, or even hobbies during a gap are all great ways to tell a personal story. Remember, it's about how you frame the narrative.

Q7. What's the typical recruitment process timeline?

Companies aim to fill positions quickly. The exact time frame varies, but early applicants often have an advantage. If they find enough promising candidates, they may pause the process.
